Matilda ‘Tillie’ Chavez is the Nursing Department Chair at Phoenix College working as a RN and educator (27+ years). She holds a BSN from Arizona State University and MSN from Case Western Reserve University. At CWRU, she traveled to Africa for a Community Health Internship. Matilda is a Certified Translator, receiving this certificate from ASU.

In 2007, Matilda received the Distinguished-Teaching Award from Phoenix College.

Matilda Chavez has been a Residential faculty member at Phoenix College for twelve years in the Nursing department. While at PC Matilda has developed hybrid and online courses and was instrumental in placing all of the Nursing courses onto internet platforms and continues to contribute to the department webmaster.

Matilda’s nursing career consists of a variety of experiences in the Emergency room, Intensive care Home health, Education, Occupational health and Hospice settings to name a few.

Her career interest has always involved nursing, education, community and culture. Working at Phoenix College as Faculty in the Nursing department has offered a blend of these interests. As faculty she spearheaded the Bilingual Nursing program and was the coordinator for the Bilingual Nursing Fellows Program (BNFP).

Matilda has been the Nursing Department Chair since 2010. Since this time frame she has been successful in obtaining National League for Nursing Accreditation (NLNAC) along with the recruitment and retention of faculty.
