“Nothing about us without us:” Disability in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

A basic tenet of the disability rights movement was full participation of individuals with disabilities and led to the mantra, “Nothing about us without us.” More than 40 years after the passage of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and approaching the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, individuals with disabilities are still grossly under- and unemployed. Access for individuals with disabilities typically makes us think about ramps, elevators and sidewalk curb cuts but what about invisible disabilities that can’t be seen? Digital accessibility and neurodiversity are garnering more attention but strategies and resources to ensure full access and participation are still somewhat mysterious. During this workshop, we will demystify the disability experience and provide helpful strategies and resources that participants can use in their day to day practice to create accessible and inclusive environments for individuals with disabilities in their organizations.
